Liz Truss's first speech as Prime Minister is in jeopardy as an 'omen' deluge forced MPs to scamper inside 11 Downing Street as the lectern was removed from the front of number 10.
With Truss just minutes away from 10 Downing Street, officials moved the lectern away from the famous address as rain battered the street.
Before that, the famous podium even had a black bin liner popped over the top of it.
BBC presenter Huw Edwards expressed confusion as to whether the new PM's address to the nation would go ahead.
Seconds later, the lectern was returned to its position as Truss and her entourage appeared to take a longer route to her destination to give the rain a chance to clear.
"The rain panic is over," Edwards said, receiving news that Truss would speak before heading into Downing Street.
"Truss will be worried about some of the political metaphors being written at the moment," said the journalist's interviewee Nick Eardley when the rain was at its zenith and people online rushed to offer hot takes.
"An omen for Liz Truss’ premiership?" asked one Twitter user. "First omen for this new pm a bin bag placed over her opening moment to protect from driving relentless miserable dampness.." chimed in another.
Despite the damn weather, Truss's welcome was audible – as those assembled cheered as she took the stand and paid tribute to her predecessor, Boris Johnson.
She promised "spades in the ground" to make sure that people aren't facing rising costs, and said she would "deal" with energy bills.
"As strong as the storm may be, the British people are stronger," she said ironically.
"We can ride out the storm," she added, as the rain appeared to have cleared for good.
