TWO people have died in a motorway horror smash after their car hit the central reservation.

Emergency crews were scrambled to the M3 in Surrey at around 12.45am.

The driver, 69, and his 67-year-old female passenger were sadly declared dead at the scene.

Police closed the motorway at the junction for the M25 in both directions while investigations are carried out.

The Eastbound carriageway has since been reopened to two lanes but the Westbound will remain shut for the next few hours.

Officers are now appealing for information following the tragedy.

Surrey Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses after a single vehicle collision on the M3 this morning (20 July), after a car collided with the central reservation at around 12.45am.

"Sadly, the driver, a 69-year-old man, and the passenger, a 67-year-old woman, were both declared dead the scene. Their next of kin are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The collision took place between junctions 2 and 3 (westbound towards Lightwater) and the carriageway will remain shut for at least a few more hours. The eastbound carriageway has now re-opened two lanes."
