A man who was dressed as a woman while trying to have sex with a dog has been jailed for 12 weeks after he was caught by a horrified member of the public.
Peter Lerwill, 30, admitted the vile act after he was initially arrested and kept in custody when the shocked onlooker alerted the police.
The dog was taken to a vet but was thankfully unharmed and later returned to its owner while a bail address where Lerwill would not have access to animals was searched for.
Officers confirmed that the incident happened in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex – where Lerwill is from.
He has also been banned from owning or having any control of a dog for five years while also being placed on the Sex Offender’s register for the same amount of time.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘Lerwill, of Western Road, Hurstpierpoint, admitted attempted intercourse with an animal at Lewes Crown Court and was sentenced to 12-weeks in prison.
‘In addition to the custodial sentence Lerwill has a five-year criminal behaviour order prohibiting him from owning or having any unsupervised custody or control of a dog. He will also be on the Sex Offender’s Register for five years.

‘Lerwill was arrested after police received a report of a man dressed in women’s clothing involved in a sexual act with a dog. The dog was immediately taken to a vet for an assessment and any care. Thankfully it did not suffer any physical injury and was returned to its owner.
‘Lerwill was charged and remanded in custody immediately following his arrest where he then spent a short period of time remanded in prison while an address could be verified where he would not have access to any animals.
He was released on conditional bail by the courts pending a trial, during which time Lerwill changed his plea to guilty.
‘Forensic samples obtained during the dog assessment strengthened the case that there had been activity of a sexual nature with the dog,’ the spokesman added.

Lead investigator Oliver Robinson said: ‘This was an extremely upsetting case where Lerwill preyed on a defenceless animal. This was also a challenging case which relied on witness accounts rather than the victim, as in most cases.
‘Thanks to the prompt reporting by the informant we were able to arrest Lerwill and complete forensic examinations within a timely manner which helped secure the conviction.
‘This conviction means Lerwill will be appropriately managed by a specialist team of officers for five years to ensure compliance with the orders imposed by a court.’
In June this year, another man Dean Beer, 56, sickeningly recorded himself sexually abusing his pet before sending it to another person on via Facebook Messenger.
But the disturbing footage was uncovered when the police went to his home after receiving information from the National Crime Agency about the uploading of an indecent image.
He was locked up for nine months after he was described as having an ‘unhealthy and depraved interest in bestiality’.
