Young people looking for a tasty treat will have to go elsewhere after a McDonald's branch banned all under-18s past 5pm.

The much-loved fast food chain took the decision to refuse unaccompanied under-18s at its Lord Street branch in Liverpool after its employees were subjected to 'verbal and physical abuse'.

A McDonald's spokesperson explained that the store had a 'zero-tolerance policy' for this kind of violent behaviour, Liverpool Echo reports.

They said: "Over recent weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of incidents of antisocial behaviour in the area with our people being subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

"This decision was not taken lightly and we are working closely with the police to find a resolution and help reduce these incidents."

They added: "We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to crime and antisocial behaviour, and have temporarily restricted restaurant access to under-18s from 5pm."

And the strict rule is clearly being enforced as one customer overheard a security guard telling a young man about the policy after he tried to enter during the forbidden hours.

"As I was leaving the security guard stopped a man he believed to be a teenager and told him they weren't allowing people under 18 into the restaurant after 5pm without an adult with them," the customer explained.

The same customer had witnessed 'large groups of kids' being ejected from a cinema and park in the same area the previous night.

"I was in town the night before and there were large groups of kids all over Liverpool One [shopping centre] and they were moved on a number of times by security near the cinema and in Chavasse Park," they said of a similar incident, suggesting the problem might be more widespread and not limited to the fast food chain.

The ban is currently temporary, but it is not clear whether it might be extended if antisocial behaviour and violence towards employees continues to be a problem.
