A Victorian man has died in the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquakes that have killed more than 24,000 people.
Greenvale grandfather Suat Bayram is among three Australians reported killed in the deadliest quake to hit southern Turkey and north-west Syria in two decades.
Greenvale man Suat Bayram, 69, was visiting Turkey with family when the deadly earthquakes struck.
In a post on social media, his daughter Ebru Hudaverdi confirmed the 69-year-old, who was visiting Kirikhan in the Turkish region of Hatay when the disaster occurred, had died.
“We have lost our beloved Father/Grandfather Suat Bayram,” she wrote.
“We are devastated. We ask everyone to please respect our privacy and allow us time to grieve.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) also confirmed on Saturday morning that an Australian woman had died, but did not detail her age or where she was from.
DFAT said it was providing assistance to the families of a woman and a man, who were identified by family members in the country.
“We send our deepest condolences to their loved ones,” a department spokesperson said.
The body of Sydney man Can Pahali was found in Turkey on Thursday, the first reported Australian death in the disaster. The government has been unable to confirm his death.
Bayram’s family had been pleading for government assistance to help locate him.
“My heart goes out to everybody who has been affected by this earthquake and anyone who has family there, it’s been a nightmare,” daughter Imren Bayram said on Friday.
Up to 80 Australians and their families are being supported in Turkey and Lebanon, according to DFAT.
“Australian diplomatic missions in Ankara, Istanbul and Beirut are doing all they can in difficult circumstances to support families and reach out to Australians reported to be in the area,” the department said.
More than 24,000 people have been confirmed dead after Monday’s earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria, with recorded magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5.
