Memorial services for John McCain set for this weekend

Sen. John McCain’s memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral is slated for Saturday, a week after his death.

He’ll be buried in Annapolis, Maryland at his alma mater the United States Naval Academy on Sunday, according to his campaign website.

Before heading to the D.C. area, McCain will lie in state at the Arizona capitol on Wednesday — his birthday — and there will be a memorial service in Phoenix on Thursday. Former Vice President Joe Biden will speak at the Arizona service, according to the Washington Post.

McCain’s body will then travel to Washington, D.C., where he’ll lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.

At the Saturday morning service, former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are expected to give eulogies.

McCain said before he died that he didn’t want President Trump to attend.

In the early weeks of his presidential run, Trump called into question McCain’s military service. “He’s not a war hero,” Trump said. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” The two butted heads ever since.

Vice President Mike Pence is expected at the funeral service, White House officials told the Associated Press.
