Moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake shakes holiday island of Crete – the third to jolt Greece so far on Boxing Day

  • The quake reportedly struck 170km east of Heraklion the EMSC said on Twitter
  • The Geodynamic Institute said the quake struck at a depth of 6.4km (3.9 miles)
  • There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage following the earthquake

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 has shook the Greek holiday island of Crete – the third to jolt Greece so far on Boxing Day.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) earlier reported the tremor as having a magnitude of 6.0.

The quake reportedly struck 170km east of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, the EMSC said in a Twitter post. 

On its website, the Geodynamic Institute said the quake struck at a depth of 6.4km (3.9 miles).

There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage following the earthquake.
