Incredibly, Adam Murray and his partner Lauren managed to stop the runaway vehicle before it crashed into a parked car on the other side of the road.

Mr Murray, who had been unloading shopping out of the boot, was almost mown down by the Fiat before Lauren managed to grab the handbrake as he attempted to push against the car and stop himself being crushed.

The drama happened on Friday afternoon.

Mr Murray explained that his six-year-old daughter Sami, had tried to get out of the car before they’d opened the door for her.

As she climbed over the seats from the back she knocked the handbrake sending the car rolling into the road.

The 24-year-old said: ‘I had literally just got home from work.

‘We were taking the shopping out the car, and Sami climbed over the seat and knocked the handbrake off.

‘Our house is on a main road and has a slight incline and it started to roll.

‘It was lucky that there was nothing coming either way because I could have been run over or it could have caused a crash.

‘We were very lucky all of us – my partner managed to stop the car before it hit the car parked opposite.’

Adam was left with bruised knees following the incident but was otherwise unhurt.

He said that Sami was upset, but okay.

‘She was upset and crying because she knew what she’d done and what could have happened, but it was an accident.

‘The only advice I can give to people really is to make sure your kids always get out either on their side or wait till the parents let them out because Sami being impatient and climbing over the seat nearly caused a big mess.

‘The scare has certainly taught her a lesson not to do it again in the future.’
