An elder abuser laughed after tossing a lit firework at a 66 year-old homeless man which then exploded and burnt his victim. The horrific attack happened in Harlem, New York, on Monday night and was recorded by the assailant’s pal.
Phone camera footage of the incident saw the pyrotechnic tossed at the vagrant as he slept, with the victim jolted awake by the firework as it exploded and injured him. His attackers laughed and smiled as they ran away, with the homeless man now being treated in hospital for burns.
A spokesman for the New York Police Department said the man is in a stable condition, and that the hunt for his attackers is ongoing. He was injured amid an ongoing spate of illegal fireworks displays which have been rocking New York City for the last week and a half.
Residents in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens have complained of being kept awake all night by the street explosions, many of which appear to involve display-grade explosives.
It is illegal for private individuals to buy or set off fireworks in NYC. The city has long been home to rogue July 4 displays, but fed-up locals say this year’s explosions have begun earlier than ever, and gone on for longer each night.
The NYPD has seen more than 13,000 calls about fireworks displays so far in June, compared to just 32 between June 1 and June 22 last year.
Mayor Bill De Blasio’s official residence Gracie Mansion was besieged by protesters honking their horns at midnight on Monday, with the group warning that if they couldn’t sleep, they wouldn’t allow the mayor to sleep.
De Blasio has since announced a crackdown, and says he has directed the NYPD to target firework sellers in a bid to curb the supply of the explosives.
