Mothers are jailed after donning clown masks for 'punishment beating'

Mothers, 43 and 45, are jailed for 10 years after donning clown masks to carry out bleach ‘punishment beating’ over a row on Facebook

  • Kathryn Llewellyn and Teresa Morgan-Peters wore clown masks as disguises
  • The two mothers attacked their victim with a Stanley and doused her in bleach

Two mothers who put on clown masks before breaking into a woman’s home, attacking her with a Stanley knife and dousing her with bleach have each been jailed for 10 years.

Kathryn Llewellyn, 43, and Teresa Morgan-Peters, 45, wore ‘trick or treat’ clown masks as disguises before breaking into their victim’s home in Ystradgynlais, near Swansea.

The Hallowe’en attack, which was described as ‘punishment beating’, followed a ‘petty squabble’ on Facebook between Llewellyn and her victim.

The two women woke their victim up by ‘cackling’ down the phone on the night of 31 October before carrying out their attack, which left the victim with scars on her face.

Now, both women have been jailed for 10 years each and handed indefinite restraining orders against their victim, following a trial at Swansea Crown Court.

Kathryn Lewellyn, 43, and Teresa Morgan-Peters, 45, wore clown masks to attack their victim on Hallowe’en

Prosecutor Robin Rouch told how the nightmare on Halloween began when victim Philippa Stevens was woken by a series of three silent phone calls at 1am – then heard scary laughing noises.

Mr Rouch said: ‘They started laughing like clowns cackling.’

Two women then barged into her home after midnight on October 31 – and she told police of the terrifying attack.

She said: ‘I thought it must be one of my mates clowning around with Hallowe’en. I saw two figures coming down the hallway in clown masks.

‘One started coming at me with a Stanley knife. Then the other one came at me and I had bleach thrown at me.

‘They didn’t say nothing. One had me down to bleach me.’

Ms Stevens pulled one of the attackers’ masks off but was unable to make out who it was in the darkness – only that it was a white woman.

She then fled to a friend’s home with wounds and doused in bleach.

She said: ‘My adrenaline was going. I didn’t know it was bleach at the time. I couldn’t smell it, I couldn’t taste it, I couldn’t feel it.

‘I only knew about it when I went to my neighbour’s and my black pyjama top was orange.

‘She was going to kill me. They wanted me dead. They knew exactly what they were doing. It was planned; it was vicious; it was co-ordinated.’

Ms Stevens suffered knife injuries to her face, neck, arm, back, and thigh at her home in Ystradgynlais, near Swansea.

But in a victim impact statement she said the attack was something from a ‘horror movie’ and she no longer kept mirrors in the house due the the scars on her face.

She said: ‘While the physical scars will heal enough but what they have done to my mind is not fixable. My life will never be the same again.

‘They attacked me for no reason at all and the fact they were wearing masks makes it even worse – it was terrifying like something you see in horror movies.’

Swansea Crown Court heard a social media row flared after Llewellyn had posted explicit ‘nonsense’ about the victim online – and Ms Stevens messaged her partner to stop.

But the court heard he replied: ‘Watch your f****** back. Don’t f*** with me’.

The attack by the two clown-masked attackers happened just days after the social media row.

A court heard DNA from the women was found on a mask and bottles used in the attack.

Llewellyn, of Godrergraig, and Morgan-Peters, of Ystradgynlais, were found guilty of burglary, wounding with intent, and having an article with a blade or point.

David Leathley, defending, Llewellyn, said: ‘It’s a total anomaly what has caused this. It appears to be a paltry squabble on social media – very petty.’

He said that despite Ms Stevens’ injuries and scarring suffered in the attack ‘she remains a very attractive person.’

Morgan-Peters’ barrister said she had suffered the deaths of her father and brother and a marriage breakdown in the build-up to the attack.

Judge Geraint Walters said the two attackers dressed in ‘ghoulish’ masks and the victim suffered ‘considerable’ injuries including six stab wounds.

He said: ‘The facts of the case can only be described as truly disturbing.

‘You checked your victim was at home by making phone calls to her. Many of those were menacingly silent ones and in others she described laughing noises, described as ‘cackling clown’ laughter.

‘Each of you were wearing terrifying clown masks to conceal your identities.. Neither of you spoke a word during the incident and you took steps to make sure you were not going to be identified.

‘This was unquestionable a pre-planned, vicious attack on a woman in her own home in the dead of night by two masked intruders.

‘I do not find it easy to understand that some dispute about something on social media could have brought about this horrendous piece of criminal activity.’

They were each jailed for 10 years and handed an indefinite restraining order against their victim.
