There’s nothing quite like the look on a child’s face when they see a cute animal – be it a puppy, kitten or something else.
One mum was hoping to create this special moment for her children by getting the family a sweet new pet.
Amanda Johnson had been thinking about buying a hamster for a while, but on August 14 she finally took the plunge and headed to the pet shop.
She selected the "most active and fun" fluffy hamster the store had, before heading home to surprise her family.
But things didn’t quite go to plan.
On the 35-minute drive home, Amanda felt something brush her leg. She chose to ignore it.
Then it happened again and she caught a glimpse of the little hamster, sitting behind the clutch pedal.
The fluffy pet had managed to get out of it’s cage, which had been placed in the boot, and was now moving freely about the car!
Amanda drove the rest of the way cautiously, unable to stop and search at the side of the road.
Once home she desperately looked for the family’s new pet, to no avail.
In a post on Facebook, which has been shared over 5,000 times, she explained what happened next.
"Get home, jumped out and had the last glimpse of the orange fur ball as it burrowed its way behind the pedals. All evening I checked the car every ten minutes trying to entice the thing out – nothing.
"Anyway, this morning I was first out the door to check of any sign and it’s eaten its way through the passenger seatbelt of my car.
"I’ve been to four garages and they have told me the damage to foamy parts of the car including under the seats is extensive and it’s only been 24 hours!
"We have had no luck in finding it! This could only happen to me! Ask me how much I’m loving life right now!!!!!!"
Following this initial post, Amanda shared updates on the hilarious situation over the next few days.
On day three of having the hamster, she took the car to the garage where mechanics informed her that the damage the pet was causing would result in "hours and hours of labour and diagnostics".
She also discovered the passenger door airbag had been destroyed.
A friend suggested she try vacuuming the car to lure the hamster out – or lay humane traps, so she headed to the hardware store to buy mouse traps.
After four days, she added: "This hamster is fast becoming my life! The little s*** has defied eight traps. He has also started nibbling the plastic around the seatbelt area."
People on Facebook are loving the story.
Animals doing the funniest things
One friend suggested she put a hamster wheel in the car because "hamsters can’t resist the wheel".
Another parent said they would never be getting their child a hamster after reading this.
A third added: "The wiring in your car is going to be ruined."
