Network Rail sparks fury for ‘axing terms like pilotman and banksman in favour of gender-neutral language’
- Network Rail reportedly instructed staff to sign a form recognising the new rules
- But staff have hit back and slammed the new language as ‘wokery gone mad’
Network Rail has been blasted for ‘virtue-signalling’ for allegedly introducing gender-neutral language job titles and phrases for its staff.
The rail company reportedly instructed staff to sign a form to confirm they would observe new gender-neutral terms like ‘manually controlled level crossing’ instead of ‘manned level crossing’.
But a source told the Sun the new rules made the company look like a ‘laughing stock’ and slammed them as ‘wokery gone mad’.
Staff have also reportedly been told to use gender-neutral terms like ‘traffic marshal’ instead of ‘banksman’ and ‘pilot’ instead of ‘pilotman’.
The source told the Sun: ‘These changes are from a lengthy list of demands invented by higher-ups to appear more with the times.

‘But we’re looking more like a laughing stock. They should stick to improving services rather than virtue-signalling. It’s wokery gone mad.’
Network Rail has been approached for comment and clarification.
