Notting Hill Carnival horror as 8 stabbed and cop bitten in spate of violence

Notting Hill Carnival turned into a nightmare for some in its final hours as eight people were stabbed and one man left in critical condition.

The traditional two-day August Bank Holiday event in London was thought to have been relatively peaceful compared to previous years, however the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the colourful celebration ended in horrific violence.

The Force confirmed that a 29-year-old man was in critical condition after being stabbed in Warfield Road, at around 9pm last night – with eight other stabbings around the carnival's route were also confirmed.

And shockingly, one police officer was bitten and was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

One of those stabbed was a 19-year-old in Ladbroke Grove before 8pm, while the others injured were aged between 18 and 40.

All of those were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, although another man refused help from emergency services despite being slashed with a knife.

The Met also confirmed that 275 arrests were made over the two days, with 110 of those happening on Sunday for various offences including assaults on police officers, sexual offences and carrying offensive weapons.

A group of men were spotted with a gun, but were stopped by officers – one man was arrested and the weapon seized.

Monday saw another 165 arrests made for similar offences.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan slammed those who caused chaos at the event.

He said: “It is regrettable that for a second year in a row, Monday night at Carnival has been marred by serious violence.

“Nobody disputes the significance of Carnival on London's cultural calendar and the overwhelming majority of those who came will have had a positive experience, however we cannot overlook the stabbings, sexual assaults and attacks on police officers that we have seen.

“Carnival is a challenging policing environment.

“Officers were asked to be vigilant and alert but to be approachable, respectful and sensitive at the same time – they did all of that and more and they deserve our recognition and our thanks.”
