A professional dominatrix who accidentally killed a client has been found guilty of manslaughter.

The accused, Madeleine Joan Lewin, chose to represent herself in a bizarre turn of events at the supreme court in Cairns, Australia.

She was on trial in connection to the death of businessman Anthony Brady, who was found dead in a hotel room at the Sunshine Tower Hotel.

Lewin neglected to cross-examine any witnesses or give her account of what happened and the jury reached a verdict in less than an hour, finding the woman guilty in a unanimous verdict, according to ABC.

The 34-year-old left her papers on the floor beside her, presented no evidence to the court and did not make a closing statement to the jury.

The unconventional approach stunned the court, with the judge reminding the jurors that Lewin’s failure to give evidence should not be considered ‘evidence against her’.

Police had entered the crime scene in Lewin’s hotel room only to find Brady dead and tied up in bondage gear, the court heard, with some of the bindings used ‘difficult to remove’.

CCTV footage shown to the jury suggested Lewin left the hotel in a hurry after seeing a client before she took a taxi to a friend's house.

According to ABC, a series of messages showed Brady, 52, arranged to meet Lewin at the hotel for one hour of her sexual services, costing AUS$350.

CCTV footage captured Mr Brady walking across Cairns from his own hotel to the one where Lewin was waiting for him, and withdrawing money from a nearby cash machine before taking the lift up to her room, the last time he was seen alive.

Prosecutors argued Lewin had not taken reasonable care to ensure the safety of her client, describing her actions as “inherently dangerous”.

Justice Henry announced that he was considering asking for Lewin to consent to seeing a psychiatrist before she would receive her sentence, but she refused.

Lewin is due to be sentenced on Friday morning.
