‘Nurse stabbed’ at hospital as patients and staff put on lockdown

A hospital is on lockdown after a nurse was reportedly stabbed by a knife-wielding attacker in its grounds this morning.

Patients, visitors and staff members have been ordered not to leave the site of Ailsa Hospital in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

Some have apparently been locked in rooms – as officers and a police helicopter continue to search for the suspect.

The University Hospital Ayr campus was also put on lockdown following the incident, which occurred shortly after 10am.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran said in a Tweet: "Due to an incident on the grounds of Ailsa Hospital earlier today, Ailsa Hospital and University Hospital Ayr campus are on full lockdown.

"No members of staff, patients or visitors will be able to leave the sites until advised."

In a later update, it added: "Staff should be aware that University Hospital Ayr is NOT on lockdown. However, Ailsa Hospital is still on lockdown and no members of staff, patients or visitors will be able to leave the site until advised."

Police received a report of a woman being attacked in the grounds of the hospital in Dalmellington Road, Ayr, at around 10.05am.

The victim – said to be a nurse – is undergoing hospital treatment but her condition is currently unknown, STV reports.

Patients and workers were reportedly locked in areas of the hospital as a search for the suspect got under way.

The police helicopter continues to circle Ayr, while cars trying to enter both hospitals are being stopped by officers.

A heavy police presence remains at the scene, according to the Daily Record.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 10.05am on Thursday, police received a report that a woman had been attacked in the grounds of Ailsa Hospital on Dalmenington Road in Ayr.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the woman has been taken to hospital.

"Local officers, supported by a police helicopter, are carrying out a search of the area.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Billy McClean, associate director for the health board, added: "NHS Ayrshire and Arran is aware of an incident in the grounds of Ailsa Hospital this morning.

"We are assisting Police Scotland with their investigations, and to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors.

"We are unable to comment any further at this time."

The search for the suspect remains under way.
