Our village has been victim of cruel jibes for years and we're sick of it – everybody says the same thing | The Sun

LOCALS in a village blasted for it's horrific stench have hit back at pong claims as fiction.

Locals in Lount, Leics, have lived in the shadow of a huge tip and waste composting site for years.

But locals say they have had enough at being defined by the tip – and are sick of the misbelief that their village smells.

Manager of the Ferrers Arms pub, Cheryl Thomas, said: “People say it stinks but that’s nonsense – it doesn’t smell at all.

“It’s lovely around here. I drive in all times of the day and night and I’ve not smelled anything untoward.

“There’s a lot of nonsense flying about.

“One guest who came in said the only time you’ll smell anything is when they’re muck-spreading on the field.

"We’re in a rural location, so what can you do about?

"There’s nothing untoward and no strange smells anywhere. It’s just bizarre that people have said this.

“We totally revoke it.

“We don’t want daft things flying around when we’re trying to get people into the pub

“If we smelled then we wouldn’t be up 17 per cent year on year, would we.

“People love the village – it’s a load of nonsense that it smells.”

Lount – which has a population of less than 200 people – is down the road from the area’s household waste and recycling centre.

A composting facility run by environment giant Suez processes up to 75,000 tonnes of green waste per year.

Villagers say it is unfair that their community has become synonymous with the dump.

Geoff Clarke, 73, said: “This is a nice little hamlet. Everything about it is nice. I’ve lived here for six years and never had an issue with the smell.

'WE DON'T STINK'

“Occasionally when the wind blows you pick up a whiff. It’s very basic. I don’t know why people have come out with such nonsense.

“There’s a chap across the road who gets in touch with the company that runs the dump anytime there’s a problem.

"He contacts them and then they spray the tip with a kind of perfume.

“It’s just nonsense to say that Lount smells.”

Lount is a collection of thatched cottages and newer-build homes near the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Detached properties have sold for as much as £795,000.

Harry Drummond, 20, who lives in one of the houses closest to the waste sites, said he had become “nose-blind” to the smell.

He said: “When my family moved here seven years ago it was all I could smell.

“We didn’t notice it when we bought the house, but the first few months it was really strong.
