Police release lorry crash footage as chilling warning for drivers

The terrifying moment a lorry slammed into cars in a crash that left a driver with life-changing injuries has been released as a warning to other motorists.

David Price, 65, was driving the lorry along the A17 in Newark, Notts., when he failed to spot traffic building up in front of him on June 8, 2018.

By the time he put the brakes on, it was too late.

Footage taken on his dashcam shows him smashing into a car at 49mph, so fast that its windows immediately shatter.

The car then ploughs into another vehicle in front, which then crashes into a lorry.

Price’s front window smashes and nothing else is seen on the dashcam.

The driver of the Renault Clio – a Leeds University student – suffered such severe injuries she was forced to drop out of uni.

She suffered a bleed on her brain, a broken back, broken neck, broken arm, broken ribs and a broken nose.

The driver of the Audi A1, who was travelling to visit her daughter in Leeds, also suffered significant injuries and ‘believed she was going to die that day’.

Price was only 15 metres away from the Clio when he applied emergency braking.

He needed more than three times that amount of distance to safely stop at speeds of 55mph.

Inspector Heather Sutton, Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for the Newark and Sherwood area, said: “We have issued the dashcam footage, with the agreement of the victims, as a warning to drivers to pay attention when behind the wheel.

“Price’s dangerous driving caused catastrophic life-changing injuries within the space of a few seconds.

“It could all have been avoided if he had paid attention when behind the wheel. Now he has time to reflect on the consequences of his actions in prison.”

David Price, 65, of Chapel Lane, Manby, Lincolnshire, was sentenced to 18 months in prison when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (November 7) after pleading guilty.

He was also given a 29-month driving ban.
