The banger is back – with a record 15.4million cars on Britain’s roads forecast to be at least ten years old by 2027.

Drivers are expected to be behind the wheels of an extra 3.6million of them compared with 2021 – meaning 40 per cent of cars on the road will be more than a decade old in five years.

Classified advertising firm Auto Trader, which based the forecast on Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency data, blames the rise on disruption to car production caused by the pandemic.

Shortages of semiconductors and other parts have left two million older cars on the road compared with pre-virus trends.

The average asking price of ten-year-old cars on Auto Trader is up by £2,000 to £6,176 since 2019. The most popular are BMW 3 Series, VW Golf and Ford Fiesta.

But Halfords chief executive Graham Stapleton warned: ‘Older cars are more likely to develop faults, are more costly to maintain and are more polluting.’
