This is the moment a pair of reindeer were seen on the loose galloping down a Suffolk road after escaping from a Christmas grotto at a Suffolk country estate. 

Dashcam footage shows how the animals blocked a dual carriageway on Sunday, causing major delays in a bizarre incident.

The reindeer wandered onto the A11 near Barton Mills stopping vehicles in both directions at around 3.20pm.

As motorists gaped in astonishment, the reindeer skipped and jumped to avoid being caught and traffic was held up for several hours during their antics. 

Suffolk Police closed the road and tried to catch the reindeer, which eventually left the road at around 5.20pm when the carriageway was reopened.

It has since emerged that the reindeer escaped from a Christmas attraction at The Elveden Estate – before making their own way back to the estate. 

The reindeer had been brought in for a Santa’s grotto by an outside company, it is understood, but decided to make a run for it.

The Estate told MailOnline they made their own way back onto the estate’s grounds last night and were secured by their owner this morning at first light.  

National Highways East had said on X: ‘@suffolkpolice have closed the A11 near BartonMills in both directions between A1134 Thetford and A1101 due to several deer loose in carriageway. 

‘Plans are being made to get traffic within the closure released and we will update as soon as we get further news from scene.’

In an update at 4.45pm, National Highways East said a ‘large number’ of reindeer were on the road and that police were ‘trying to catch them’.

Social media users have been making light of the incident, with one saying: ‘I’ve herd it all now.’

Another joked: ‘How very Rudolph them to interfere with peoples’ journeys.’

Others said the reindeer must have ‘lost Santa’. 

A spokesman from Suffolk Police told MailOnline: ‘We were called at 2.20pm on Sunday 3 December to reports of two reindeer on the A11. Officers attended and the road was closed in both directions to ensure the safety of road users.

‘The reindeer later moved away from the road and the road was reopened.’

Roads were being reopened shortly after 5pm.

Police added: ‘They were captured this afternoon by 12.05pm. We supported in the efforts to capture them.’
