Accused serial killer Rex Heuermann’s two children ‘cry themselves to sleep’, their mother has said – describing their horror at his alleged deeds and their shock at finding their home turned upside down by investigators.
Asa Ellerup, 59, filed for divorce from Heuermann on July 19 – less than a week after his arrest.
Heuermann was arrested on July 13 and charged with the murder of three sex workers whose bodies were found on a Long Island beach in 2010.
Ellerup was away from home when the women are believed to have been killed.
The couple have two children – a daughter Victoria Heuermann, 26, who worked at her father’s Manhattan architecture firm, and a son Christopher Sheridan, 33, who has special needs.
Ellerup on Monday said they had all been left traumatized by the events of the past few weeks, and stunned by the state of their house after police spent 12 days searching for evidence.

She said that after her home was turned upside down and taken apart, she does not have a bed to sleep in.
‘I woke up in the middle of the night, shivering,’ she told The New York Post.
‘Anxiety.
‘My children cry themselves to sleep. I mean, they’re not children. They’re grown adults but they’re my children, and my son has developmental disabilities and he cried himself to sleep.’
Victoria Heuermann told relatives she was feeling ‘not human’.
Ellerup’s lawyer, Bob Macedonio, explained: ‘She meant what they’ve done to them and the family is not even human. They were just complete animals. They treated them like animals.’

Ellerup said she was shocked at the state of her house after the police left.
‘I had three cats. Litter boxes were a strew, thrown on top of everything. My pictures were thrown all over the place,’ she said.
‘My couch was completely shredded. I don’t even know if there’s any parts to the couch.
‘There was a Pelican case in my house which had clothes in it, and inside of a Pelican case they have foam. I was able to take two pieces of foam and put it together so I could lay down.
‘My backyard, I can’t even explain it.
‘I had a greenhouse and I like planting seeds and my greenhouse, they it, they lifted it up. They stuck it, it’s high. You know, they threw it on top of a whole bunch of stuff. It’s a $3,000 greenhouse.’
She said her son’s guitar was broken, and her daughter’s Dungeon and Dragons cards taken.
The locks were changed, so the family needed to get new keys.
They are now making a list of the damage, and speaking to the district attorney’s office.

Ellerup, who was married to Heuermann for over 20 years, said that she had no choice but to live in the house.
‘It’s the only thing I got,’ she told the paper.
‘We did get another chair out from the basement and upstairs so me and my son can sit and talk. He’s so distraught and doesn’t understand, and as a mother, I have no answers for him.
‘But I said, ‘We’re together. ‘That’s really what matters right now. That you and me are sitting here together and we will get through this.”
Macedonio said Ellerup was ‘blindsided’ by her husband’s arrest.
‘She was in complete shock. Completely caught by surprise,’ the lawyer said.
Heuermann is due back in court on Tuesday for a brief hearing.
