Seaside resort strips off for naked calendar – from nude golf to topless mermaid

A seaside resort is baring all for the environment after gracing the desk of Sir David Attenborough with their cheeky naked calendar.

Stripping off for all to see, businesses from Prestatyn, North Wales, have shed their clothes to raise funds for a series of whale tail-shaped recycling bins along the promenade.

It’s the town’s second attempt at a calendar, with Sir David Attenborough among those who got a copy of last year’s effort – sending a handwritten letter of thanks.

The town’s business forum, which organised the calendar, also invited the famed naturalist to the grand opening, but he spared them their blushes.

Forum secretary Sally Smart, 51, joked: “I possibly scared him with a calendar full of flesh."

Now the town is looking to get the environmental project going again after it fell victim to Covid-19.

Sally added: “We have lots of grants and held lots of fundraising projects but Covid shut them all down.

“The pandemic slowed the process and we really want to see the tails in place this year.

“I am a wedding photographer and my best friend suggested I shoot a cheeky calendar as I had no other work on.

“The calendar was a big success so I decided to do another for this year.”

The calendar features cheeky contributions from shops, cafes and restaurants and even a roller derby team.

It also features Tyler Turner, the Welsh entry to Miss Mermaid International, a beauty pageant where contestants are also judged on their swimming skills.

Sally added: “Each month is a different businesses.

“Some businesses loved it so much last year that they were first to commit to this year’s calendar.

“Nerves were a big thing for some but we laugh so much and make each shoot as fun as it can be that they love the whole process.

“The chaps were more nervous that the ladies we found."

January’s entry, featuring Katie Walsh Hair, was particularly challenging thanks to all the mirrors, Sally said.

She added: “Katie and her team were the hardest for sure.

“There were bums and boobs everywhere but they were the most confident people I have ever met.”

The whale tails, which will tower over the town's promenade at nearly eight feet tall, have been designed by South African artist Jacha Potgieter, who lives in Betws-y-Coed.

They’re meant to send an environmental message, as well as serving a practical function.

Sally said: “The sea and the environment is at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts and we wish to keep our oceans free of plastic in any way which we can.

“The structures will be individual pieces of artwork and look magnificent on our promenade.”

Calendars are priced at £10 each and can be ordered from the business forum at [email protected] or purchased at participating businesses around the town.
