Central Station stabbing: Warren Greenup sent to prison for trying to kill son-in-law Cameron Parkin as revenge for alleged acts of domestic violence against his daughter

A confronting video shows the moment an elderly man stabbed his son-in-law multiple times at a busy train station in a ‘flagrant act of vigilantism’.

Warren Greenup was sentenced to eight years in prison earlier this month for trying to kill Cameron Parkin as revenge for alleged acts of domestic violence against his daughter.

The 74-year-old pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to murder after telling police he wanted to slit his son-in-law’s throat and ‘kill the bastard’.

At about 2pm, the surveillance footage shows Greenup wearing a white T-shirt and long beige shorts as he lingers around the entrance to the busy train station.

As Mr Parkin stops to talk to a woman near the entrance, the elderly man rummages through a purple canvas bag on his shoulder.

He walks towards the younger man and draws his hand back to reveal he’s holding a large knife with a white handle.

The CCTV footage shows Greenup rear his arm back before plunging the blade into Mr Parkin’s back, taking him by surprise.

The two men grapple and Mr Parkin punches his father-in-law in the face, sending him toppling backwards into a steel bollard.

Mr Parkin rears back and clutches at his side, where his navy shirt is stained dark red with blood.

The video footage shows Greenup recovering his feet and advancing towards Mr Parkin as the son-in-law backs away.

The CCTV footage shows Greenup rear his arm back before plunging the blade into Mr Parkin’s back, taking him by surprise 

The younger man runs into the terminal while looking over his shoulder at his attacker and holding his arms up as if to ward off another attack.

Greenup advances after him holding the purple canvas bag containing a month’s worth of his medications, which he prepared in the knowledge he was going to be arrested.

The court documents reveal Mr Parkin was running through the concourse screaming ‘Help me, I’ve been stabbed’ as the 74-year-old pursued him with the knife still in his hand.

A brave bystander eventually manages to convince the elderly man to put down the knife and sit down, and Mr Parkin walks back towards the train station entrance.

The surveillance footage shows he has a large wet bloodstain covering a large portion of his back and another staining the right half of his shirt.

His hand is also covered in blood from clutching the stab wound on his side.

Judge Warwick Hunt told the court that none of his wounds were ‘actually life threatening’.

The two men grappled before Mr Parkin landed a punch on the older man while he clutched the knife

When police arrived at the bloody scene, Greenup told them frankly that he had been planning to stab his son-in-law ‘for a while’.

‘He’s been a real c*** to my daughter,’ the court heard he told officers.

‘I didn’t do what I came out to do. I wanted to kill the bastard.’

The 74-year-old admitted he had planned to surprise his son-in-law and slit his throat, but the victim had run away before he could fulfil the plan.

During Greenup’s sentencing, Judge Hunt said he had been ‘seeking retribution’ for Mr Parkin’s alleged acts of domestic violence against his daughter.

Judge Hunt told the court that Greenup had heard from his daughter about the ‘repeated and lengthy abuse’ she suffered at the hands of Mr Parkin and took it upon himself to commit the ‘flagrant act of vigilantism’.

The judge found there was ‘some degree of provocation’ but Greenup had overreacted.

Medical reports tendered to the court suggested ‘the level of overreaction’ could be attributed to the elderly man’s depression, which ‘made a material contribution’ to his murder attempt.

The court was told his decision-making processes were affected by his mental illness and he considered stabbing his son-in-law was ‘an attempt to protect his daughter’.

Judge Hunt concluded the 74-year-old had no remorse for his actions and wouldn’t rule out the possibility that he would attack his son-in-law again.

Greenup was sentenced to a minimum of four years and nine months. He will be eligible for release in September 2026.

His wife and daughter wiped away tears and hugged each other after the verdict was delivered.
