An experienced skydiver has died after crash landing at an airport in Gippsland.

Police say the man got into difficulty during the jump and crash-landed near Airfield Road in Morwell on Saturday afternoon.

Commando Skydiving Club board member David Richardson said the man had been jumping from 12,000 feet with seven other divers.

“It’s an extremely tragic event. He’s been with Commandos for 20 to 30 years, he’s one of our more experienced instructors,” Richardson said.

He said the man was a father, had completed about 2500 dives and also enjoyed scuba diving and cycling.

“He’s just an all-round good bloke,” Richardson said. The club extended its condolences to the man’s friends and family.

Emergency services remained at Latrobe Regional Airport on Saturday evening and police said they would prepare a report for the coroner.

Richardson said the club had experienced skydiving deaths in its 60-year history, but Saturday’s incident was the first in more than a decade.

A 34-year-old man died earlier this month in another skydiving incident in Connewarre, south-east of Geelong.

Australian Skydive in Torquay said at the time the man was an experienced skydiver.
