A Scottish schoolboy has been left in a coma after suffering a horror quad bike crash close to his home in Dumfries and Galloway.
Callum McDougall, 15, was riding the powerful Honda quadbike along the A711 near Mutehill without a helmet on Saturday around 1:25pm when he was hurled from the vehicle and struck his head.
He was rendered unconscious in the crash and was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University hospital in Glasgow where doctors established he had sustained a severe brain bleed that forced his temperature to spike dangerously.
Medical staff managed to get his temperature under control but the 15-year-old, who is a keen rugby player and volunteer at a horse rescue centre, remains in a coma.

Callum’s mother Amy Woodford – a self-employed cleaner – is at her son’s bedside while friend Susan Murdoch launched a fundraiser to help support the family.
Susan told The Scottish Sun Callum had moved his arm and coughed since his accident but did so while unconscious and still has not come around.
‘It was very serious when [the air ambulance] brought him. Amy hasn’t left his side since the accident.
‘We want them to know we’re all behind them.’
Callum is a pupil at Kirkcudbright Academy in Dumfries and Galloway, and suffered his accident just a few hundred metres from the school on the coastal road.
Police cordoned off the area for hours on Saturday afternoon following the crash as the teen was airlifted to Glasgow and officers set about maintaining and analysing the site.
Susan’s online appeal to raise cash for Callum and his family went live on Tuesday and has already drummed up more than £4,000.
Susan described Callum as a ‘fantastic boy, very kind and well-mannered’.
She said the rugby-loving teen is in for a ‘marathon’ of surgeries and rehabilitation provided doctors are able to revive him from his unconscious state.

Police Inspector Greg Dinnie said: ‘A teenager has sustained serious injuries and it is important that we establish how this crash occurred.
‘We are appealing for anyone who may have been driving in this area prior to the crash and may have seen a red coloured quad bike to come forward.
‘You may also have been in the area and have dash-cam footage that can help us.
‘Please check back and get in touch. Anyone with any information should contact police via 101, quoting incident number 1739 of July 2.’
