Victorian Greens MP Gabrielle de Vietri is putting her money where her mouth is in support of the young climate crisis protesters who gatecrashed state parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
In an almost unheard-of show of unity, Labor, Liberal and Nationals MPs teamed up to turf de Vietri from the lower house for the next two sitting days. The Richmond MP has also forfeited her wages for the suspension period over her public support of the protest action.
The suspension came after de Vietri refused to apologise for lining up her three Greens colleagues for a selfie – a breach of parliamentary rules – in the chamber on Tuesday as the youngsters unfurled their banners in the public gallery.
Some of the protesters were back on Wednesday morning to see de Vietri dealt the consequences, cheering on the MP from the chamber before they too were turfed out by security.
It was defiance as usual from the Greens’ first-termer after she left the chamber.
“It’s alarming to see Labor using their power to stifle young people’s democratic right to protest and distract from their inaction on the climate crisis,” de Vietri said, vowing to join a students’ climate strike this Friday.
Well, she will be at a loose end for the rest of the week.
