Top barrister’s girlfriend developed ‘extremely unhealthy obsession’ and continued to bombard him with messages after being convicted of stalking, court hears

A top barrister’s ex-girlfriend continued to bombard him with texts despite a restraining order, a court heard.

Helen Faure was handed a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years after breaching a restraining order five times.

The 52-year-old was first hit with the restraint last June as she developed an ‘extremely unhealthy obsession’ for her ex-partner.

It banned her from going within 200m of Charles Béar’s home and contacting him at all, after his seven-year-old daughter was ‘traumatised’ by one incident.

But Faure flouted these rules on a number of occasions when coming within 200 metres of his home while visiting his local coffee shop.

The court also heard that she sent Mr Béar more than a dozen texts between November 8 to 17 last year, despite being instructed not to contact him.

When Faure learned he had told police, she texted Mr Béar, saying: ‘Piece of sh*t, calling 999 to cry.’ 

An email referred to ‘meat horror’ – said to be a ‘new obsession’ of Faure ‘linking the victim with particular forms of animal injury’.

Despite the 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years, magistrate Mark Oxman told Faure she was likely to be sent to jail if she did not stop.

Mr Béar previously told the court he dated Faure for eight months before their relationship ended abruptly during a holiday in France last August.

He said an argument erupted when Faure sent a postcard to Mr Béar’s ex-partner. 

Mr Béar previously said: ‘I said it would cause a great deal of distress to send that card.

‘To my horror a few days later I received a WhatsApp picture from my ex of the card saying “what’s this?”

‘I made it quite clear that was the end between us. I said to her that what you have done is completely wrong.’   

 Mr Béar, based at Fountain Chambers in Temple, specialises in ‘commercial litigation and arbitration, fraud, shareholder disputes, aviation work, and judicial review’ according to his firm’s website.

The KC is described in The Legal 500 as ‘Probably the most outstanding trial and appellate advocate of his generation’.

 Following the break-up Mr Béar said Faure turned up uninvited at his home at all hours and called him up on his phone through the night. 

At the height of the issue, Faure followed Mr Béar into his home in upmarket Highgate, northwest London, and refused to leave as his family cowered in their bedrooms.

Faure also sent a barrage of offensive emails to Mr Béar making derogatory remarks about him and family members.

She turned up to Mr Béar’s home repeatedly and waited outside his chambers in central London, it was previously heard.

He claimed she also turned up ‘begging’ for cash and even hand-delivered a letter to his former partner with a list of texts between Mr Béar and herself.

Faure denied stalking the lawyer between 29 September and 20 October 2021 but was convicted.
