TWO houses were evacuated after a sink hole opened up on a residential road.
A 6ft (1.8m) by 4ft (1.2m) cavern almost swallowed driveways of two adjoining properties in Grays, Essex.
Stricken Rectory Road was closed as a precautionary measure, Thurrock council said.
The fire service said it was working with the council, police and utility companies "to make the scene safe".
A spokesperson for Essex Fire Brigade said they were called to the incident at 11.40am on Thursday after a gas main was exposed.
A spokesman for the council said there were no injuries it had been made aware of.
