Ukraine begs for help from international leaders after Russia invasion

Ukraine’s President is urging global leaders to provide defence assistance to his country as Russia stages a full-scale invasion.

Hundreds of civilians in Kyiv are already feared dead after Russia launched a bombing campaign on the city at around 5am local time.

Troops sent by Vladimir Putin are already on the ground in the country, with footage showing tanks rolling across the border from Crimea.

It followed a series of cyber-attacks on Ukraine yesterday, leaving the websites of several banks and government departments inaccessible.

President Volodymyr Zelensky is now urging global leaders to help protect its airspace and territory from Russia.

In a statement, he said Moscow ‘has unleashed a war with Ukraine and the entire democratic world’.

He asked for world leaders to provide large-scale defence support and to protect Ukraine’s airspace from the ‘aggressor’.

The head of the Ukrainian military has said he had received orders from President Zelensky to repel a Russian invasion.

Commander-in-Chief General Zaluzny said: ‘The supreme commander the Armed Forces of Ukraine gave orders to inflict maximum losses against the aggressor.’
