CNN notes that the visit is not on her public itinerary, but according to a senior Taiwanese government official and a US official, she is expected to stay in Taiwan overnight.

The visit would come as the tensions between the US and China grow and has since sparked fear that the country could retaliate.

Three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas L. Friedman said that it would be "utterly reckless, dangerous and irresponsible," for Pelosi to visit Taiwan in a New York Times opinion piece.

"Nothing good will come of it. Taiwan will not be more secure or more prosperous as a result of this purely symbolic visit, and a lot of bad things could happen," Friedman wrote.
