Who is Fri Martin?

Fri Martin, also known as Farieissia Martin, was imprisoned for murdering her ex-partner Kyle Farrell.

Fri stabbed her boyfriend fatally after an argument, when the mother-of-two returned back home late from a night out.

During the argument, Kyle attempted to strangle her, and in self-defence she stabbed him.

She claimed self-defence but was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 13 years for murder on June 9, 2015, when she was 22 years old.

Heather Savage, Fri's best friend, said in an interview: "Fri had grabbed a kitchen knife from the counter and shouted at him to get off. It was a single stab to his heart."

After the sentence Heather took the custody of Fri's two daughters.

What happened to Kyle Farrell?

Kyle Farrell met his eventual girlfriend Fri at primary school, and they started going out when they were 16.

The pair had an on-off relationship to begin with, and broke up several times.

However on July 12, 2012, Kyle announced on Facebook that the couple was expecting their first daughter together, and they had moved in.

But two years later Fri stabbed Kyle at their house in Toxteth, Liverpool, on November 21, 2014, after an argument.

According to Fri, Kyle sent her abusive messages due to her being out late, and when she got home the couple had an argument.

Fri told the police that Kyle had attempted to strangle her before she picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the heart, though at first she claimed intruders had stabbed Farrell.

Fri called 999 and was heard saying: "Baby, baby, look at me, look at me, I didn't mean it."

She later admitted to stabbing him.

He died shortly after being taking into hospital.

Fri had opened up to her best friend Heather about being abused by Kyle before the incident.

Heather said: "Fri fell into the road in front of oncoming cars and a big scene kicked off with me shouting at Kyle.

"I took Fri to hospital but she didn't tell doctors the truth."

Where is Fri Martin now?

With the help of Justice for Women, an organisation that supports women who have been jailed for killing violent partners in self-defence, her murder sentence was overturned and she was instead convicted of manslaughter in May 2021.

As a result, her sentence was taken down to 10 years.

During her first trial the photos of her neck, which proved that she was strangled by Kyle, were not given to the judge and therefore not taken into evidence.

In her appeal, their abusive relationship and the impact on her mental state was considered in relation to the killing, and in December 2021, Fri was released from prison.
