SUELLA Braverman becomes the third-shortest Home Secretary ever as she leaves the role on October 19, 2022.

The former Attorney General only became Home Secretary on September 6, when Ms Truss brought her in to replace Priti Patel. 

Who is Suella Braverman?

Suella Braverman was elected as the Tory MP for Fareham, Hampshire, in May 2015.

She was re-elected in 2017 and 2019, each time increasing the Tories share of the vote

Braverman was born Sue-Ellen Cassiana Fernandes on April 3, 1980, in Harrow to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father, and grew up in nearby Wembley.

She studied law at Queens' College, Cambridge, and completed a Master's in European and French law at Pantheon-Sorbonne University.

During her undergraduate studies, she was President of the Cambridge University Conservative Association.

She qualified as an Attorney in New York State after sitting the New York Bar exams.

On her website she states she is a Conservative because "we are the party that says it doesn’t matter where you start. It's about where you are going".

What roles has Suella Braverman worked in?

Ms Braverman became Home Secretary on September 6 when Ms Truss brought her in to replace Priti Patel.

However, on October 19, 2022, The Sun reported that Ms Braverman was sacked from her role.

Prior to this, former Tory PM Boris Johnson appointed Braverman as Attorney General.

she also served on the Education Select Committee and as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Treasury.

Braverman backed leaving the EU and on January 9, 2018, was appointed Brexit Secretary.

She resigned from the post in November 2018 over the unacceptable terms of Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement.

Was Suella Braverman running for Prime Minister?

Braverman was running to become the new Tory leader to replace Johnson as Prime Minister.

She was officially named as a candidate on April 12, 2022, after securing at least 20 MP supporters.

The Attorney General has promised to crack down on wokery, slash taxes and shrink the size of the state.

In the first round of voting she will need to get at least 30 colleagues to stay in the race.

A day before the PM's resignation she told ITV's Peston that she would stand to replace him.

She said: "I'll be honest with you, Robert. Yes, I will.

"I love this country; my parents came here with absolutely nothing.

"It was Britain that gave them hope and security and opportunity, and this country's offered me incredible opportunities in education and in my career.

"I owe a debt of gratitude to this country and to serve as prime minister would be the greatest honour, so yes, I will try."

She went on to speak about what she will be looking at working on if she is elected as the next Prime Minister.

Braverman added: "I think fundamentally we need to deliver some proper tax cuts so that people can be living with the cost of living challenges in a more feasible way.

"We need to solve the problem of boats crossing the channel.

"We need to make sure Brexit opportunities are felt across the country.

"And finally, we need to get rid of all this woke rubbish and actually get back to a country where describing a man and a woman in terms of biology does not mean that you're going to lose your job."

How did Suella Braverman vote on Brexit?

Braverman is a Brexiteer.

She said that leaving the EU "would best serve our national interest".

On July 12, 2022, she told The Times: "Brexit was not a revolution, it was a restoration."

She continued: "A government I lead will safeguard Brexit, take on the Blairite liberal consensus and get this country back on track."

After the result of the referendum she said: "We must all work hard to address the concerns that were raised about leaving the EU, and more than ever, we need to put previous divisions aside and engage in a calm and rational discussion."

She added: "This country has a great future, and will continue to play a positive role in the world.

"I know that Britain will maintain her open-mindedness, tolerance, progressiveness, economic prudence and commitment to social reform.

"That is the Britain I love and which I am so honoured to serve in Parliament as the representative of the people of Fareham."
