NOTORIOUS TERRORIST Ayman al-Zawahiri has died at the age of 71.
The Egyptian-born surgeon came from a wealthy middle-class family of scholars and doctors.
Who is Ayman al-Zawahiri?
Ayman al-Zawahiri was the leader of Al Qaeda and was part of the team that orchestrated the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
Known as Osama bin Laden’s right hand man, he spent almost 20 years as one of the FBI’s Most Wanted with a $25m bounty on his head.
Born in 1951, al-Zawahiri became affiliated with anti-establishment Islamist organisations in his youth, following the execution of the Epyptian revolutionary Sayyid Qutb.
He went on to study medicine at Cairo University, graduating in 1974.
Al-Zawahiri was married at least four times.
His first wife, and two of their six children were killed in an airstrike in Afghanistan by US forces, following the September 11 attacks.

Al-Zawahiri, 71, was killed on July 31, 2022, in an early morning drone strike authorised by the US Central Intelligence Agency.
He was standing on the balcony of a safehouse in Kabul, Afghanistan, when two hellfire missiles fired from a drone.
The attack was authorised by US President Joe Biden who said: “To those around the world who continue to seek to harm the United States, hear me now.
"We will always remain vigilant, and we will act, and we will always do what is necessary to ensure the safety and security of Americans at home and around the globe.”

Al-Zawahiri worked as an eye-surgeon before becoming Bin Laden’s personal advisor and physician.
In the late nineties, Al-Zawahiri merged the Egyptian branch of the Islamist Jihad group with Al Qaeda.
In 2009, he became the chief operational and strategic commander of the terrorist organisation.

He took over Al Qaeda in 2011 after the former leader Bin Laden was killed by a gunshot in a dramatic raid by US Special Forces in Pakistan.
He could be replaced by his son-in-law Abdal-Rahman al-Maghrebi.
