The body of a Traralgon woman has been pulled from a Gippsland creek, one day after a witness reported a person and their dog had been swept away in floodwaters.
Victoria Police confirmed on Tuesday that they had found a woman’s body in Traralgon Creek and had been in contact with her family.
Nine News identified her as 57-year-old local grandmother Mari Cao.
Her son Cameron said on Facebook that his mother was taken by strong currents in the flooded creek while trying to walk across a bridge in the early hours of Monday morning. Her body was found close by.
“I love you so much and I’m begging for whatever is there to let you in and be with what they call heaven and peace,” he said.
On Monday, police appealed for more witnesses to come forward after receiving reports a person and a small dog were seen walking by Whittakers Road in Traralgon about 5.30am, before the person appeared to stop to roll up their trousers near the banks of the swollen Traralgon Creek and were swept away.
Authorities later released CCTV footage of the pair on Monday morning.
Cao’s death is not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Her dog, reportedly named Roxy, has not been found.
A watch and act alert remains in place for flooding in the areas surrounding Latrobe River and Traralgon Creek due to heavy rain in the Gippsland area.
