Police and paramedics were scrambled to the Arndale Centre shortly after 11am this morning and confirmed the woman had died at the scene.
A second member of the public was treated at the scene for minor injuries but did not require further treatment.
Pictures show the usually packed High Street entirely empty and closed in both directions.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly after 11.10am on Saturday 3 November police were called to Market Street in the city centre to reports that a woman was believed to have fallen from a building.
"Emergency services attended, but the woman sadly died at the scene.
"Another member of the public was also treated at the scene for minor injuries.
"A number of road closures are in place in the nearby area. This will also impact the tram services.
"High Street is currently closed in both directions at the junction of Church Street to Shudehill.
