Early on the morning of Thursday, April 15, Francesca Wikoff woke to find that her truck's tyres had been slashed in the night.
But the person responsible left a clue – their own finger.
"I literally have been laughing all day because if I don't, I might cry," Francesca told local news station CBS5.
The former volunteer firefighter says she heard a strange noise at around 10:30 the previous evening and then discovered the criminal damage to her GMC Yukon – and the discarded digit – on her driveway when it got light.
She suspects that she knows the person responsible. She had recently quarrelled with a neighbour at a somewhat tipsy get-together and a trail of blood leads from her driveway to his house.
"He was asked to leave [the party]," she explained, " so he tried to retaliate by slashing my tyres.
"However," Francesca added, "He left a little consolation prize."
"It's pretty comical," she told reporters. "You would think that if you're gonna go to the hospital, especially if you just severed your finger off, that you would take said finger with you".
Francesca continued: "We assume it happened at 10:30 last night because we had our neighbour that lives next to him heard a loud scream and then a car speeding off."
Asked if she was pleased that the vandal had injure themselves while trying to damage her car she said no, but added "I don't find joy in anybody hurting themselves. However, karma has a good way of working itself out”.
Local police are aware of the incident and while there have been no arrests so far, they have part of the suspect in custody. Francesca says they took the gruesome clue away in a brown paper bag.
Francesca says she hasn't seen her neighbour since the incident but, commenting on the damage to her truck she said , she added: "Well, I got the better hand.”
