Julia Michaels Talks about her Newest Collaboration with Selena Gomez … and Selena Shares Her Thoughts as Well

In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Julia Michaels spoke about her single “Anxiety,” a collab with long-time friend Selena Gomez. And Selena took to social media to share some thoughts on the collaboration as well.

Julia said that she was “one hundred percent” committed to being vocal on the topic of mental health, even if some people in the past were hesitant to grapple with the topic. “I think there’s still a lot of people that feel like they are not allowed to,” Julia said, “or they suppress it because they think it’s a taboo thing to talk about.”

However, Julie feels that she and her duet partner Selena are from a new generation that sees these types of health strugges differently. “This generation is just becoming way more emotionally evolved,” Julia stated. “And [anxiety] is something that we should talk about.”

She also spoke about how she and Selena decided to work on the track together — which is the two artists’ first duet together, even though they have collaborated in other ways on many tracks in the past. Julia told Billboard,

When I sent it to her, I was like, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’ And she was like, ‘This is amazing. I want to do it.’ And I think this was the song that works the best for us, because it’s something we both struggle with.”

But there were some specifics about the unusual track that attracted them to work on it together.

We also liked the idea of doing a song together where we’re talking about our relationship with anxiety. We’re not talking about our relationship with men or us fighting over somebody or something like that — those things that are typical duets for women. “

And while it might not initially sound like it, Julia said that she and Selena ultimately felt that it was a song about female empowerment — without ever mentioning “female empowerment” directly.

This is a female empowerment thing, but it’s completely different. We’re not throwing our fists in the air, but we’re saying, ‘Hey, we have anxiety, but we’re okay with it.’”

For her part, Selena posted an old photo of herself with Julia with a long caption on her thoughts about the new track. Calling Julia her “sweet soul sister,” Selena wrote

This song is extremely close to my heart as I’ve experienced anxiety and know a lot of my friends do too. You’re never alone if you feel this way. The message is much needed …”
