Ashanti is ready to step back into the spotlight, this time as a multifaceted mogul.
The singer, 37, is the new collaborator and face of Miss Circle, a New York City-based fashion line by Isabel Deng. Fans who have been following the “Always on Time” singer will recognize the silhouettes — sultry, form-fitting and glam — as Ashanti’s go-tos from the early aughts.
“My motto has always been to stay classy and sassy and sexy, not trashy,” Ashanti, 37, told Page Six Style. “I think that I always try to inspire women to be bosses and demand respect. You can still be sexy and swaggy and be the boss.”
The Miss Circle x Ashanti collection, which features 21 pieces at prices ranging from $19 for a belt to $199 for a dramatic long-sleeved sequined dress, is available now online.
Though Ashanti said she’s been approached in the past by other fashion brands, she felt that the timing was right to team up with Miss Circle. “This is a very visual industry, so I feel like the more things that you’re a part of and the more that you’re able to show your brand and your style and who you are in different fashions, the better off you are,” she explained.
With new music and a movie — “Stuck,” slated for a 2019 release and starring and executive-produced by Ashanti — up ahead, the 2000s icon is looking to branch out beyond her R&B roots. “It’s really important not to put all of your eggs in one basket or to be one dimensional. Now more than ever, you have to keep the attention span and you have to keep a lot of things going on,” Ashanti said.
She counts Diddy and J.Lo as two people who have helped pave the way as moguls, parlaying their music stardom into entrepreneurial endeavors with alcohol, fashion and beauty brands.
Perhaps Ashanti’s next foray will be in the health and wellness space: After 15 years in the industry, the singer works hard to stay in shape. She hits the gym regularly — with one trainer on each coast — and follows a pescatarian diet that mostly eschews fried foods. She also diets. “It’s good to fast,” she said. “This may be TMI, but colonics are great too.”
But Ashanti would rather feel the burn at the gym than not feel right in her clothes — and when it comes to her wardrobe, comfort is key. “As women, we already have to wear uncomfortable shoes, so our feet are always hurting,” she said. “So if you can find an outfit that looks amazing, fits amazing and it’s comfortable, you’re winning.”
