Something to see here! Adrian Edmondson, 66, says his short-sightedness has been miraculously cured in his ‘ancient’ age
He is one of the best known celebrity glasses wearers but Adrian Edmondson has revealed how his lifelong short-sightedness has been miraculously cured at the age of 66.
The star has admitted he no longer needs spectacles, which he has worn since he was eight-years-old, and he puts says he believes the condition recently ‘caught up with and cancelled out’ the long-sightedness that can happen later in life which he says was coming ‘at the opposite direction.’
Edmondson – star of television programmes including The Young Ones, Bottom and The Comic Strip films – made the admission while performing to an audience at The Bath Forum earlier this month.
He said: ‘I know what you’re thinking, where’s his specs? He doesn’t wear specs, you’re saying. You’re thinking of that character I played in Bottom. But he wears them in real life too – you’re saying – on such esteemed shows as Good Morning Britain and The One Show. (In actual fact) I started to wear specs when I was about eight – I became a little speccy-four-eyes. I was bullied in the playground. I stood up to it.’
‘The short-sightedness I had can be seen if you like on an increasing graph over time. But as I got this ancient, the long-sightedness of old age has been creeping up from the opposite direction.

‘And at this precise moment in my life I am in the crosshairs where the short-sightedness has been cancelled out by the long-sightedness. And I can almost.. see. So I will be able to see if you try and nip out. I have locked the doors and cross-checked.’
Edmondson is also not wearing glasses on the cover of his forthcoming book, a memoir called Berserker!.
However, the actor, who is married to Jennifer Saunders, is synonymous with his usually thick-rimmed glasses.
In a picture he showed the audience, Edmondson was wearing a pair of spectacles when he was 11 and at junior school.
Photographs from his autobiography show those same thick-rimmed angular spectacles in pictures of him at Pocklington Grammar School in his late teens.
Later pictures from Pocklington School showed him in John Lennon-style round-rimmed spectacles which were popular at the time in 1975 when he was 18.
And in one of his earliest showbusiness shows, he performed in glasses at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1979 with Rik Mayall.
Short-sightedness – also known as myopia – usually starts in children aged between six and 13, according to the NHS’s website and the medical profession agrees that it does not improve with age.
If a person gets age-related long-sightedness and already has myopia, it is recognised that the both issues can ‘compensate’ one another meaning for a while, the person might feel their eyesight has actually got better.
