Alison Hammond explains why she couldn’t make charity event

Alison Hammond was addressed by Tony Hudgell, a young boy who had both legs amputated due to abuse by his parents, who expressed his disappointment that she was a no-show at his fundraising trek.

“We needed you – you never came,” he plaintively told the presenter via a video link on This Morning, appearing alongside his adoptive parents Paula and Mark.

An apologetic Alison told him she was “disappointed”, but filming obligations had prevented her from being there on his big day.

Courageous Tony needed to have both legs removed after vile abuse from his biological parents led to fractures, organ failure and life-threatening sepsis.

He was just 41 days old when a horrific assault took place, which was left untreated for ten days and caused agonising pain.

Now united with new adoptive parents, Tony had announced he’d be taking on a charity trek up Orrest Head, a hill in the picturesque Lake District, to raise money.

Alison had told the little boy she’d be there for his big moment – and he reminded her that she’d been a no-show when they caught up on video afterwards.

She replied: “Well, what it was, Tony, I was recording… Listen, because I do need to explain to you. I was recording an episode of [The Great British] Bake Off and I couldn’t make it.”

However, she insisted: “Next time, I’m gonna try my best to be there.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t there. I am disappointed in myself, and I am sure everyone was disappointed that I wasn’t there.”

The TV host then encouraged him: “But you did it! You did it on everyone’s behalf, and I’m so proud of you.”

After hearing that Tony had raised an impressive £40,000 for charity, she praised his efforts and offered to make her own contribution.

“Because I wasn’t there, is it alright if we put £500 into the kitty as well? Would you forgive me then?” she asked.

It seemed that all was well that ended well, as Tony nodded in agreement.

Earlier this year, an announcement was made that Alison would be replacing Matt Lucas on The Great British Bake Off, and she has been busily preparing for the role.

Tony is going from strength to strength, having won a Pride of Britain Award for his bravery.
