Amber Davies admits she was ‘really hurt’ when she and Kem Cetinay split: ‘I did love him’

Love Island star Amber Davies has looked back on her time winning the ITV dating show back in 2017, opening up on how "hurt" she was after her break-up from co-star Kem Cetinay.

West End star Amber, 26, and barber Kem, also 26, decided to go their separate ways four months after winning the show together. And the singer has now explained how she "loved him", and how hard it was "navigating" her way through her newfound fame.

"I just lived in the moment. It wasn't until a year after everything had settled. I had been going 100 miles an hour for a year," she told Emmerdale actress Natalie Anderson, 40, on her podcast The Capsule by Natalie Anderson.

She continued: "And being a part of the winning couple, you have a lot more responsibility, and obviously the relationship didn't work out and I was really hurt by that."

Amber went on: "So I was trying to navigate having this whole new world and being sad because I did love him. I did love him so much, I did."

Amber went on to say that she felt "lost" after winning the programme, and she used "drinking and partying" to "mask" how she was feeling deep down.

"I really came down a bit after. About a year after, I think Dani Dyer's year had gone in, and I hadn't processed any of it. I was just living it," said Amber. "It really affected me quite a lot.

"And that's when I started to party, and drink, I was drinking to mask feeling lost. I felt lost. I didn't know I would have a door open for me for the West End after Love Island because I was Amber Davies from Love Island."

Amber confessed she broke down to her mother, saying she "lost her spark" after her reality TV stint. But the star quickly picked herself up after landing a role as Judy Bernly in West End musical 9 to 5 in 2019.

The Welsh star further revealed that singing on stage was a "therapy" for her while she was struggling with the break-up with Kem.

"My one big number in the show was a huge ballad called Get Out and Stay Out. And just singing that every night was like therapy to me,"Amber said. "I was still struggling from my break up, the break up that had happened. So I did take those emotions into the job."

Amber explained: "I think that job really helped me, not get over it, but the storyline was so fitting for that time in my life.

"I had to put this character on every night and I thought, 'Amber needs to take a bit of advice from Judy Burnley, who I was playing.' And it did. By the end of the year, I felt untouchable."

Amber is currently dating her on-and-off beau Nick Kyriacou, and in May, the singer hinted at them getting engaged sometime soon.

In a TikTok video, Amber responded to the question: “How often do you rehearse saying ‘yes’ to your imaginary future proposal?”

"Every day. Not all day every day, but every day," she said on camera, as well as captioning the clip with the words: "This is true."
