BAFTA nominations 2023: All Quiet On The Western Front leads with 14 nods as The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once follow closely with 10 ahead of the biggest night in British film

All Quiet On The Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once lead the nominations for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards. 

The nominations were announced live by Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh on Thursday, ahead of next month’s ceremony for the 76th annual film awards set to be hosted by actor Richard E Grant and TV presenter Alison Hammond. 

The three movies will compete for Best Film alongside Elvis and Tar – who have also scored well in the shortlist announcement in the biggest night of British film.

All Quiet on The Western Front leads the way with 14 nominations, while The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once follow closely behind  with 10, while Elvis has nine nods and Tar received five. 

Over 7,000 critics took part to shortlist the best films for a host of different categories – from Best Actor to Production Design. 

All Quiet On The Western Front is a 2022 epic anti-war film based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. 

Nod: Black comedy-drama The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, is close behind with 10 nods

One to watch: Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Qua in quirky science-fiction thriller Everything Everywhere All At Once

Directed by Edward Berger, it stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow.  

The Banshees of Inisherin follows two lifelong friends (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) who, ‘find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them’.

Colin Farrell is up for Best Actor, but will face tough competition as he faces Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living). 

Meanwhile in the Leading Actress category Ana de Armas scored her first nomination for her portrayal as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s Blonde. 

She will compete against Cate Blanchett (Tar), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once).

In the Best Director category, four of the six are first time Director nominees: Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King); Todd Field (Tár), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front).

There were four nominations for Aftersun; The Batman; Good Luck to You, Leo Grande; Top Gun: Maverick and The Whale and three nominations for Babylon; Empire of Light; Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio; Living and Triangle of Sadness respectively.

Margot Robbie in Babylon, which landed three nods 

The film with most nominations, All Quiet on the Western Front (14) equals Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001) as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.

The following British shorts were nominated: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse; Middle Watch; Your Mountain Is Waiting; The Ballad of Olive Morris; Bazigaga; Bus Girl; A Drifting Up and An Irish Goodbye. 

Host Richard, 65, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in crime biography Can You Ever Forgive Me?, said: ‘I feel hugely privileged to be hosting the EE Baftas for the first time and the opportunity to celebrate the very best of the extraordinary range of this year’s films.’

He first rose to prominence by playing a hapless drunk actor in Withnail And I in 1987 and has had parts in Gosford Park, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Downton Abbey.

Talented: Actor Richard E Grant and TV presenter Alison Hammond will host the 76th annual film awards ceremony at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday February 19.

Presenters: Film critic Ali Plumb said he is thrilled to be hosting Bafta’s red carpet show alongside his ‘friend’, presenter Vick Hope (pictured), who in turn called him ‘brilliant’

Alison, meanwhile, is hosting BAFTA Studio, an immersive and access-all-areas experience, as part of the BBC One show and film critic Ali Plum in on the red carpet with Vick Hope. 

The This Morning star, 47, said: ‘I’m so excited to be hosting at this year’s EE Bafta Film Awards with THE Richard E Grant.

She added: ‘We’re going to have a lot of fun bringing the glitz and glam of backstage to everyone watching at home around the world’. 

Emma Mackey and Aimee Lou Wood, who play friends Aimee and Maeve in Sex Education, are among the nominees for the BAFTA EE Rising Star Award, which were announced on Tuesday. 

Naomi Ackie, who recently took on the iconic role of global superstar Whitney Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody is also on the nomination list.

The actress, 30, said of her nomination: ‘I’ve followed and been inspired by the EE BAFTA Film Awards for so many years, so to be recognised amongst this incredible group of artists is huge!

Daryl McCormack, who is well known for his lead role in British comedy-drama Good Luck to You, and Sheila Atim, who stars in the recently released historical epic feature film The Woman King, are also in the running for the award.

The award is now in its 18th year and is the only BAFTA voted for by the public.

Voting is now open on the BAFTA website and the winner will be announced on Sunday 19 February at the EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony. 

For the first time, the ceremony will include a live broadcast to reveal the final four category winners after previously being recorded and then broadcast on the same day.

The BAFTAs will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on February 19.
