Bake Off contestants safe for another week as NOBODY leaves bread week

Great British Bake Off contestants are all safe as NOBODY leaves the show because two bakers skipped bread week due to illness – but they face a DOUBLE elimination next week

Great British Bake Off contestants all remained safe for another week after two bakers missed bread week due to illness.

Rebs Lightbody, 23, and Abdul Rehman Sharif, 29, were absent from the infamous tent this week – but judge Prue Leith revealed that this means a double elimination is looming in the near future as a result.

Pleased presenter Matt Lucas told the bakers: ‘Well, this week, nobody is going home. The judges felt given the quality here and the fact Rebs and Abdul aren’t here, that everyone deserved the chance to bake again.’

Back down to earth: Rebs Lightbody and Abdul Rehman Sharif were absent from the infamous tent this week – but judge Prue Leith revealed that this means a double elimination is looming

But Prue broke the news: ‘They were all thrilled to bits because nobody had to go.

‘They are all friends, they don’t want to see their friends go home, but sooner or later, we have to send two bakers home and that’s not nice.’

Bread week – what many argue is the most difficult of the twelve on Bake Off – was a difficult one for contestants as usual this year, but 60-year-old Dawn was particularly worried after her performance.

The IT manager from Bedfordshire said: ‘Bread week has been an embarrassment. I have come to the bottom of the pile this week, I’m extremely concerned.’

Man of the moment: On the other hand, 34-year-old Janusz was awarded Star Baker for the second time in the competition

Compliments: Paul Hollywood said of his performance: ‘Janusz is very artistic, almost illusional in some of his bakes. He’s clever and he certainly is one to watch going forward’

Episode three saw the eight remaining contestants baking two signature pizzas, a technical challenge to make a pain aux raisin and a ‘savoury Swedish’ showstopper bake.

Many people on Twitter found the showstopper was quite the opposite of it’s name – with users saying it made them ‘feel sick’ and comparing the bakes to Rachel’s trifle in US sitcom Friends.

Rebs and Abdul are to return to the show on next week’s episode.

It comes as last week fans complained about Northern Irish student Rebs, 23, who asked the fellow bakers for her help in making macarons, Garibaldi biscuits and a mask made of biscuit.

When making her feline-themed macarons, she got several hands on deck to help get her over the finish line.

One person said on Twitter: ‘Ban helping on #GBBO. That’s the only way this becomes fair.’

Rebs was left flustered when noticing her mixture for her macarons – which were modelled on her own 15-year-old cat – hadn’t turned out quite right during her first try.

She decided to start again, leaving her hugely behind the other contestants; most people’s creations were being decorated while hers were still in the oven cooking.

Great British Bake Off viewers all had the same complaint following the second episode of the Channel 4 programme – with some saying bakers shouldn’t help each other (pictured)
