Soap star Iain Robertson has issued a plea to his fans after ending up in hospital after ignoring an infection “for years”.

Iain Robertson, 41, who plays Stevie O'Hara in BBC Scotland soap River City, took to social media to share a snap of him lying in a hospital bed, warning his followers not to ignore worrying symptoms and thanked the hospital for looking after him.

Sharing a photo of himself in a hospital gown, Iain urged fans to “go see yer doctors” as he explained how ignoring a health issue had left him needing surgery.

The actor wrote: “Found myself an unexpected guest of the NHS this week. Firstly I’d really like to thank the amazing nurses – they really were amazing btw and the doctors and staff at the QEUH who took amazing care of me and so swiftly dealt with problem.

"But also it’s worth saying to folk (particularly guys my age), that this was a recurring intermittent infection that I had been dealing with myself for (literally) years & not wanting to bother the doctor with. In a matter of hours from showing GP – I was on an operating table."

Iain then added in capital letters: "GO SEE YER DOCTORS LADS!"

It’s not clear exactly what illness the actor was suffering from, however his fans were quick to wish him a speedy recovery.

One wrote: “Aw Iain, I am so sorry to see this.

"Hopefully folk will take on board your advice as so many of us often don't want to 'bother' the doctor.

"I wish you a really speedy, full recovery. It's so good to see you are being well looked after!"

Another added: "This resonated with me. Hope you're on the mend, Iain.

"I ignored a chest infection post-COVID for a month & thankfully starting to feel better now following the selection box I got from the doctors last week. May not have needed as much if I'd got it seen to earlier."

Since 2017, Iain has played the role of Stevie O'Hara in River City, replacing Cas Harkins, who had played the role from 2003 to 2005.

He’s also made appearances in Holby City, Casualty, Grange Hill and Silent Witness.

Previously, the actor opened up on how Covid lockdowns had affected his mental health and relationship.

Speaking to the Daily Star earlier this year, he said: “Last April my mental health was not in a good place. I had things going on in my personal life and relationship. We were struggling.

“I struggled in lockdown and my partner and I were pretty much stuck in the same house. She was having days where she wasn’t leaving the house because she was working from home.

“As well the stress in our lives and restrictions in filming River City, I was becoming a reactive person and had worked very hard over the years to not be.”

However, he said that things were going much better now, adding: ““Life is much better. The hard thing I found with lockdowns is you think you’re OK. We were in denial that the pandemic and restrictions were getting to us. Getting out in the hills is my saving grace.”
