BBC Breakfast viewers are left open-mouthed as Radio Lancashire reporter Graham Liver wrestles in a swimming pool filled with GRAVY
BBC Breakfast viewers were left stunned by the programme’s August bank holiday coverage which saw a presenter wrestling in gravy.
Those tuning in on August 29 were treated to aerial footage of BBC Radio Lancashire’s Graham Liver in the oniony ring the previous day with Jon Kay and Sally Nugent on commentary from the studio.
Stacksteads, Lancashire, has been the venue for the World Gravy Wrestling Championships for the last 15 years.
Jon described the action as the 47-year-old took on the unique ordeal: ‘That is the BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Graham Liver, taking part in the event, under his nickname the The Penwortham Porker, fighting the contestant Elvis in a swimming pool full of gravy.’
As Sally pointed out, this was a rather different August 28 activity than would have been the norm across the country with activities such as garden parties or village fetes.

Sally continued: ‘Graham was knocked out, I’m not surprised to learn.
‘But in fact, more than 20 men and women took part in this competition.’
The contest was held at a pub in support of the local East Lancashire Hospice, with participants also encouraged to raise money for charities of their choice.
Fighters are also required to wear fancy dress, with Graham and his local radio colleague Leanne Bayes – nicknamed the Burnley Banger – fittingly dressed as hot dogs.
The view was so engrossing that weather presenter Carol Kirkwood felt compelled to have a word, perhaps making an early bid for next year’s tournament.
However, she joked that she would only take part if there was a ‘huge Yorkshire Pudding in there.’
Rounding off the segment, Jon joked that he and Carol were booked in to face off there the following afternoon.
Viewers were soon on X – formerly Twitter – to have their say on the event, with one praising the two brave participants as ‘brilliant sports,’ while another commented with a laughing emoji.
However, someone more cynical about the day’s fundraising said: ‘@BBCBreakfast what’s a waste of gravy. Just ask for a donation. People struggling to buy food and food is being wasted.’
