Brian May too sad to look as Freddie Mercurys precious belongings sold off

Freddie Mercury exhibition opens at Sotheby’s

Queen legend Brian May, 76, has said he is “too sad” to see Freddie Mercury’s belongings being sold this week.

The late singer’s ex-fiancée Mary Austin has made the decision to sell his most prized possessions, which are expected to sell for millions over a three-day auction.

It is believed over 1,500 of his belongings including costumes, instruments and hand-written song lyrics will be up for grabs.

Ahead of the auction, titled Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own, kicking off today, Brian took to Instagram to share a picture of his late bandmate playing his guitar alongside a heartfelt statement.

He wrote: “Inescapably thinking so much about Freddie in these strange days.

“At the time this photo was taken I’m sure it didn’t seem very important to see Freddie’s fingers dancing on my own home-made guitar.

“Now it summons up waves of affection and great memories. He is so missed.”

Brian went on to say: “Tomorrow while I’m speaking passionately to Welsh farmers about cows and badgers and bovine TB, Freddie’s most intimate personal effects, and writings that were part of what we shared for so many years, will go under the hammer, to be knocked down to the highest bidder and dispersed forever.”

The rockstar concluded his post saying he “can’t look” at Freddie’s beloved belongings being let go, as to him and his loved ones, “It’s too sad”.

Brian was swiftly inundated with many heartfelt messages from his 3.2 million followers.

“Brian please buy everything and create a nice museum in your friend’s honour.”

Fahrenheit_freddie commented: “So happy that you say a word about this auction Bri!!!! I’m so upset by all of this… Thank you for expressing yourself.”

Katya.3d added: “My heart hurts for you and for everyone who was close to him. Sending you love and light, we are all here for you.”

_Seventhmoon_ typed: “I feel you Bri, I’ve always been against this auction from the very moment it was announced. It’s indeed really sad.”

Mary, who was in a relationship with Freddie for six years, spoke of the reason behind her decision for the auction last month.

She told the BBC: “The time has come for me to take the difficult decision to close this very special chapter in my life.”

Mary went on to say that apart from a few “personal gifts” and photographs of the pair, she is selling everything.

“I decided that it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to keep things back.

“If I was going to sell, I had to be brave and sell the lot,” she added.

Freddie left half his fortune to Mary following his death aged 45 in November 1999. The cause was later determined as bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.
