Carol Kirkwood ‘inspired’ by fiancé Steve in rare relationship insight

Carol Kirkwood speaks to Zoe Ball about her writing process

BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood has admitted she is often inspired by fiancé Steve Randall when it comes to putting her novel ideas to paper.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show today, the BBC weather presenter shared a rare insight into their relationship.

Presenter Zoe Ball, 52, asked Carol about her writing process ahead of the release of her new book, Secrets of the Villa Amore.

This will be the 61-year-old’s third novel, which revolves around an extravagant Italian wedding.

Carol responded by revealing that she often liked to bounce ideas off her partner, 48-year-old former police officer Steve.

“I write all over the place!” Carol said. “Most of my ideas come when I’m out walking and I’m out with my other half, Steve.

“We’ll bounce ideas around. Sometimes he’ll come up with something and I’ll think ‘That’s really good but it wouldn’t work with this character…’

“But then [he’s] sparked something else so I get my phone out and I just dictate into my phone or I’ll dictate into my laptop. Saves all the writing.”

Carol went on to explain how she felt it was important to set her stories in familiar locations in order to write authoritatively.

“I always choose somewhere that I’ve visited so I can talk about it with conviction and describe it,” she reasoned.

“The visual imagery is so important. I want to feel that you’re there and you know what it’s like.”

Zoe then quipped: “It’s also great for Steve because he gets to go to really amazing places around the world as long as you continue writing, Carol!”

Steve and Carol first started dating in 2021 and got engaged in May of last year, with the Scottish star excitedly sharing the happy news with her fellow presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay on BBC Breakfast.

The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show airs weekdays at 6.30am on BBC Radio 2.
