CashApp Founder Bob Lee Stabbed To Death In San Francisco

A well-known tech executive was stabbed to death in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Bob Lee, who was one of the co-founders of CashApp and a longtime Silicon Valley leader, was murdered in the Rincon Hill area of San Francisco very early on Tuesday morning. He was just 43 years old.

According to reports, Lee — who was presently serving as the chief product officer for a company called MobileCoin — was walking in the Rincon Hill neighborhood near the Bay Bridge at about 2:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday. At that time, police received a 911 call about a reported stabbing in the area.

When they got to the scene, they found a man who had been stabbed and severely wounded. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, but died of his injuries once there. The medical examiner’s office has not released the name of the murdered man, per CBS News. However, by Tuesday evening, tributes began pouring in online from co-workers, family members, friends, and loved ones confirming Lee was the one killed.

Per NBC Bay Area, police have not made any arrests in the homicide case. They have not released any suspect details, either. As of Wednesday morning, it is unclear if they are tracking any persons of interest.

In addition to his work founding CashApp, Lee had also previously been the chief technology officer of mobile payment platform Square. His current colleagues at MobileCoin released a heartbreaking statement of mourning on Tuesday evening. MobileCoin CEO Josh Goldbard provided this message to CBS News and others:

“Our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators. Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature. Bob was the genuine article. He was made for the world that is being born right now, he was a child of dreams, and whatever he imagined, no matter how crazy, he made real. Bob was made for the new world, he was the quintessential creator, leader, and consummate hacker. From large contributions to Android at google, to being the first CTO of Square, in that time creating CashApp, and working with us here at Mobilecoin, Bob surely had an impact that will last far beyond his short time on earth.”

Goldbard continued:

“This may sound impressive, but Bob’s real resume is the hearts and minds he touched in his time on earth. Bob’s legacy is the feeling that you can make a difference if you try, and of course his amazing children. … Steve Jobs said that ‘real artists ship.’ Bob was a real artist who shipped. Again and again and again. And we will keep on shipping, channeling Bob’s enthusiasm and spirit. Here’s to the crazy ones. We will miss you Bob. We love you. For now, MobileCoin will mourn. We turn our attention to honoring Bob’s legacy by holding his loved ones close.”

So sad.

Lee was very well-known in the tech space, and his death is already sending shock waves through Twitter.

After MMA fighter Jake Shields lamented how his “good friend was killed… in the ‘good’ part” of San Francisco, Twitter CEO Elon Musk was one of the people replying with condolences and frustration over the murder:

Here is more on the stabbing and subsequent investigation from KTVU Fox 2 News in San Francisco:

Per NBC Bay Area, the San Francisco Police Department is now asking the public to send in any insights they may have on the stabbing and the assailant. They can do so via the department’s tip line at 415-575-4444.
