Cheryl desperate for Girls Aloud reunion tour as solo career disappoints

Girls Aloud fans could have their prayers answered in the coming months, as Cheryl Tweedy is reportedly “desperate” to get the girl group back together for a reunion tour.

A source told new that the 40-year-old has been putting the feelers out to her former bandmates, who officially went their separate ways back in 2013 after an on-off hiatus.

“Cheryl is desperately hoping to tour. She’s a single mum and has a beautiful home and she loves her life, but she feels as though there’s a gap in her life, so a reunion would be great right now,” the source told us, adding, “None of the band have had hits or big success for a long time, and they think it’s the right time to do something together again.”

As well as attempting to reignite their music careers, our source said Cheryl is keen to bring the group back together to honour their late bandmate Sarah Harding, who died of breast cancer in September 2021, at the age of 39.

“They are very conscious to make Sarah a part of it,” our source said. “There will be big pictures, and they’ll make sure her memory is very much involved. She was a beacon of light with a big energy, they want her to be part of it.”

Arguably the most successful member of the group following their split, Cheryl went on to become a judge on The X Factor, and was dubbed a “national treasure” by many of her fans.

The Geordie star released four solo albums and topped the UK charts five times with hits including Fight For This Love, Call My Name and Promise This.

However, it was rumoured last year that Cheryl’s solo career was in the balance after her most recent single Let You only reached number 57 in the charts.

And our source said no one is more aware of her decline in popularity than Cheryl herself.

“The solo careers of the other girls haven’t really gone the way they might have hoped either,” our source said. “So, a reunion would be good for all of them.”

Mum-of-one Cheryl – who shares six-year-old son Bear with her One Direction ex Liam Payne – first shot to fame in 2002 when she, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle and Sarah were brought together on TV talent show Popstars: The Rivals to form Girls Aloud.

Despite quickly becoming the UK’s biggest-selling girl band of the 21st century – with more than 4.3 million singles and 4 million albums sold in the UK alone – a rumoured feud between several members of the group left the band in tatters.

Our source said, “They were kids when they were doing it the first time around, there have been regrets and fallouts but they’ve all grown up a lot.”

They also claimed that financial strains behind the scenes have left the group considering a reunion tour.

“They’re excited now and they all get on well,” the source told us. “And money doesn’t grow on trees. It eventually stops coming in if you’re not regularly working, but it’s easy to get used to living a certain lifestyle and spending a certain amount.”

In 2019, Nicola, 38, had her £1.25 million Surrey mansion repossessed by the bank following her ill-fated relationship with stalker ex-boyfriend Carl Davies.

The year before, mum-of-one Nadine, 38, was forced to cancel an entire UK tour promoting her new solo material, later telling fans it “wasn’t meant to be”.

And just last week, it was revealed that Cheryl’s business CC Entertainment had plunged £1.35 million in the red for the second consecutive year.

Losing Sarah has seen the girls rally together. It was reported last year that they were planning a one-off tribute in their late bandmate’s memory.

Cheryl also joined Nicola and Nadine for a 5k run in Hyde Park last summer for Breast Cancer Research, with Kimberley, 41, taking part remotely.

Cheryl’s ex-bandmates have all publicly expressed their desire to rekindle their pop music success.

“I would love to get back with the girls and put on a show,” Nicola told Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on This Morning in 2020.

Speaking to OK! last year, Nadine hinted at least one Girls Aloud reunion date, revealing, “We’re planning a night for an event to raise money in honour of Sarah,” and mum-of-three Kimberley told the press that the girls are “as tight as we’ve ever been”.

Let’s hope the stars align.
