It’s been 25 years since Princess Diana tragically died, leaving her young sons Prince William and Prince Harry to navigate life without her.

The brothers have grown from boys to men, and while Diana would be proud of what William and Kate have accomplished, royal expert Kristen Meinzer says Harry and Meghan’s actions would break her heart.

Speaking of the Sussexes’ bombshell Oprah interview in 2021, the commentator explains: “If Diana had seen that interview, she would have been heartbroken, but not shocked. But I think she would have been proud of Harry for refusing to let his wife go through that.”

The couple stunned viewers with revelations of racism in the Royal Family and many spotted similarities between the controversial chat and Diana’s Panorama confessional on the BBC in 1995.

Meghan revealed that, like Diana, she had had suicidal thoughts. “I just didn’t want to be alive any more,” she said.

Diana had to navigate the choppy waters of royal life largely by herself, but Kate Middleton has been able to learn through her late mother-in-law’s experiences.

Insiders say she has spent many hours watching videos of Diana, with William also protecting her from the pitfalls that ensnared his mother.

Diana’s legacy also lives on in Meghan, and ITV’s Royal Producer Lizzie Robinson, who also hosts the Royal Rota podcast, says, “The engagement ring Harry had made for her has two diamonds from Diana’s jewellery collection. He said he wanted to ensure his mother was with them on their journey together.”

Though now opting for a quieter life outside the royal family, Meghan’s philanthropic concerns and her way of vocalising her innermost thoughts have also seen her likened to Diana.

Referring to their move to California in 2020, Kristen adds: “I’m certain Diana would be thrilled with how Harry has sought his place in the world, especially as he was always the ‘spare’, who had to work harder to find his own way.

“In Meghan, he found a partner who genuinely believes in him and is on the same team. They’ve created their own lives – which is exactly what Diana was trying to do in the end.”

Diana once even toyed with a move to California, and as Andrew Morton says: “She was thinking about moving to Malibu, and saw America as a place of opportunity and openness. It’s ironic given where Harry and Meghan now live.”

Although the brothers’ relationship may still be fractured, there seems to be no mistaking that Diana’s memory will continue to burn brightly through them both – and their families – for a long time to come.

As William himself said in the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life And Legacy: “I think she’d be proud that Harry and I have managed to come through everything that’s happened, having lost her, and that gives me positivity and strength to know that I can face anything the world can throw at me.”
