DOI’s Michelle Heaton praises family for ‘support’ as she talks addiction recovery

Michelle Heaton has praised her family for their “support” during her recovery from alcohol addiction.

The Dancing On Ice star was admitted to hospital and spent four weeks in The Priory in 2021 during the height of her battle, which also included taking drugs.

And she says she wanted to take on the skating show for her young brood following the dark period in her life.

“I want to try my very best and put my all into this – getting to experience something that brings a lot of happiness to us as a family,” she says.

“They’ve been my support system through recovery. My kids are my biggest supporters.”

The Liberty X singer is mum to 10 year old daughter Faith and eight year old son AJ with her husband Hugh Hanley, who she married in 2010 in a secret Caribbean ceremony exclusively covered by OK!.

Michelle has been sober for 20 months and she says she’s finally feels strong enough to compete in a show as physically demanding as Dancing On Ice and throw herself into a new challenge.

“Even though I’ve always wanted to do it and my name has been in the hat, it was never the right time,” confesses the 43 year old.

“I feel really strong and ready. I want to do it because it’s always been on my bucket list. The show is magical.”

The ITV skating show, presented by Holly Willoughby, 41, and Phillip Schofield, 60, starts on January 15 and will see Michelle get her stakes on and take to the ice with Polish professional Lukasz Rozycki.

And it seems after overcoming her addiction, Michelle, who recently shared a series of heartbreaking snaps from her battle to mark the New Year, clearly feels she has something to prove and has her eyes on the prize.

The star says: “I am in it to win it. I have to think I want to win and if I don’t but I’ve done my best, then I’m happy.”

And personal trainer Hugh and their adorable children will no doubt be cheering Michelle on from the sidelines and also hoping she brings home the trophy.

Other famous faces taking part in the competition include 2022 Love Island winner Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, former EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer, former TOWIE star Joey Essex, The Wanted singer Siva Kaneswaran, former Hollyoaks actress Carley Stenson, Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne and Coronation Street star Mollie Gallagher.
